SEO Glossary

Above the Fold

The viewable
web page content that can be seen without scrolling down the page. Originating
from a print industry term for the top portion of a newspaper page.


Absolute Link

A link
displaying the complete URL of the linked page.
Example: <a
href=“http://www.seo.com/index.html”>SEO Service</a>.


AdCenter

A pay per click advertising
program network owned by Microsoft. AdCenter is considerably smaller than Google
AdWords. AdCenter terms are reasonably priced with excellent arbitrage
potential.


AdSense

An advertising network, owned by
Google. Ads appear automatically next to relevant content areas on advertising
pages. The site displaying the ads is paid for ad clicks by Google.


AdWords

A Google pay per click program
that uses keywords to target advertisements to web visitors who want information
for specific services or products. Most of Google’s ads are keyword targeted and
sold on a cost per click basis in an auction which factors in ad clickthrough
rate as well as max bid. Ads appear alongside Google search results and on web
pages with information related to that keyword.


Affiliate
Marketing

A web business system that pays affiliates for site visitors,
or subscribers, and/or sales coming through affiliate page links. Commissions
are tyically based on sales; usually a percentage of the sale price.


AJAX

Asynchronous JavaScript and XML is a
technique which allows a web page to request additional data from a server
without requiring a new page to load.

Google doesn’t use the keywords meta tag in web search

We went ahead and did this post on the official Google webmaster blog to make it super official, but I wanted to echo the point here as well: Google does not use the keywords meta tag in our web search.

To this day, you still see courts mistakenly believe that meta tags occupy a pivotal role in search rankings. We wanted to debunk that misconception, at least as it regards to Google. Google uses over two hundred signals in our web search rankings, but the keywords meta tag is not currently one of them, and I don’t believe it will be.

I hope this clarifies that the keywords meta tag is not something that you need to worry about, or at least not in Google.
